Heart-rate variability, one of the most sensitive markers of physiological stress and recovery, starts to climb as the body heals.

Continuous health tracking with Polar wearables

At the heart of the platform is its integration with Polar wearable devices over Bluetooth Low Energy. Each resident is paired through a simple linking flow: a staff member searches for the patient by name or admission number, confirms the pairing, and the wearable begins syncing automatically. From that moment, the platform assembles a continuous physiological picture:

  • Heart rate, sampled continuously through the day and night
  • Heart-rate variability and nightly recovery — including RMSSD, autonomic-nervous-system status and respiration captured during sleep
  • Sleep architecture — onset and end times and the full sequence of sleep and wake phases
  • Daily activity — steps, distance, calories and time spent across vigorous, moderate, light and sedentary zones
  • Skin temperature, recorded as hourly readings

Why does this matter in a treatment setting? Because sleep quality and HRV are among the clearest early indicators of how a recovery is progressing. A resident whose sleep is collapsing or whose recovery scores are sliding may be days away from a crisis a clinician would otherwise only learn about after the fact. Surfacing that trend early gives the care team the chance to intervene with support, not just react to setbacks.

The data flows over Bluetooth to the mobile app’s on-device database and then to the secure backend, so a clinician can review a resident’s trends without chasing a device around the facility. The platform also monitors the wearables themselves — battery level, storage and sync health — so a device never falls silent unnoticed. Configurable threshold and exception rules let each facility define what “normal” looks like and automatically flag readings that fall outside it.

Wearable data doesn’t stand alone. Nurses record clinical vitals — weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, pulse, pain score and respiration — directly in the app, so the automated and hands-on pictures sit side by side in one record.

From spoken word to clinical record

Documentation is the tax every clinician pays on their time. Counsellors and nurses routinely lose hours to writing up sessions; time that would be far better spent with the people in their care.

Walk To Freedom’s voice-typing feature removes most of that burden. A clinician simply speaks their notes into the app. The recording is captured on-device, transcribed using OpenAI’s Whisper, and then structured by a language model into a clean, SOAP-format progress report — Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan — ready for review.

The implementation is deliberately careful. Transcription is locked to English to avoid misreading South African accents, the structuring step uses a strict schema so the output is always well-formed rather than a fuzzy guess, and the clinician always reviews and signs the final note. The result is a progress report that takes a minute to dictate instead of fifteen to write, without surrendering clinical control.

One platform for the whole facility

Health tracking and documentation sit inside a much larger system. Walk To Freedom runs the full operational life of a treatment centre, so staff work in one place instead of a patchwork of spreadsheets and paper:

Long-running and scheduled work — overnight stock snapshots, reminders, billing sync — is handled by background jobs so the app stays responsive.

The mobile app is built with Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform, which means a single shared codebase delivers a genuinely native experience on both Android and iOS, with on-device storage that keeps the app fast and usable even on patchy facility Wi-Fi. The web administration client is built in Angular. Integrations with Xero (billing), Postmark (email) and Azure (file storage) round out a platform built to run a real facility, not just demonstrate one.
